Why It's Your Ring Finger

Why It's Your Ring Finger

In Western cultures, it is tradition to wear a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand. But did you know why wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger? In ancient times, people believed that there was a vein in the finger on the left hand that ran straight to the heart. Ancient Romans called this vein the vena amoris, Latin for “vein of love.” They believed that by placing a ring on this finger, the affections would be bound and could not escape through the fingertips. In 1549, King Edward VI of England declared this finger on the left hand the official “ring finger.”
